4th Eco Club Summit

Students across the emirate of Abu Dhabi are striving to become the next generation of eco warriors judging by their projects on display during the 4th Eco Club Summit hosted by Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD), held in the Capital, Wednesday. Their projects focus on five categories namely water, energy, waste, biodiversity, and climate change.
The summit which is part of EAD’s Sustainable School’s Initiative (SSI) is being held under the theme “The Power of Sustainable Giving” in line with the Year of Giving initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The two day summit, which is part of EAD’s Sustainable Schools Initiative (SSI), brings educational and environmental experts together with environmental youth leaders and members from Abu Dhabi’s leading school eco-clubs.
This year five speakers share their stories with SSI students on how they transformed their passion towards the environment, into actions.

Amongst these speakers is Dr. Philippe Pypaert, Programme Specialist, who coordinates major environmental programmes of UNESCO in the region. He is also a focal point for Education for Sustainable Development- with particular emphasis on water education and the application of the Ecological Footprint at schools and universities.

Others speakers include Omniyh Al Hajeri, Lead Officer, Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport, Transportation Mobility Management Team, Dr. Laila El Helaly, a Saudi national, specialising in familial relationships and Arslan Khalid, Associate Programme Officer at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Hanan Al Sammak, Co-Founder and Vice President of Heart Masters for Training and Consultancies Foundation.

Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director, Environmental Information, Science and Outreach Management, EAD said that through this event eco-clubs will display 348 internal and external projects to raise awareness in their school and communities.
Sneha Krishna Murthi & Devanshee Mishra of grade 12 had represented our school during the summit. The first day of the summit began with the various presentations followed by various workshops. Students were taught on how to use solar panels in the ‘Clean Energy Workshop’ & how to segregate the waste in the ‘Waste’ Workshop. The second day also followed the same schedule, at the end of which there was a summary session which lead to presentations by each of the workshop teams. The teams spoke about their experience in the workshop and on what they had learnt during the workshop.
At the end of the summit, schools were honored for their participation in the Sustainable Schools Initiative, for their hard work and outstanding results that have contributed to significant changes, both internal to schools or at the level of the community that surrounds them.
